Life In Music

1. Active Listening

Although these monthly lists contains album reviews of over 1000 albums, they are generally very short and contain my reaction to the album, so they tend to say more about me than the artists. The reviews are for albums I'm carefully listening to. Often more than once if it's not an album I'm familiar with.

Click link in left sidebar to see the month in review.

2. Playlist

These Play Lists of songs I've either made up in my head or that have found their way to iTunes and my iPod(s). There are nine other playlist, listed but ungraded, in addition to those directly linked below.

  1. 1990s One Hit Wonders a collection of odds and ends.
  2. 80s New Wave Hits: Just Can't Get Enough, a collection of Obscure 80s songs.
  3. R&B 2005 created in 2005 but consisting mostly of 70's R&B.
  4. Disco Box Rhino Records collection of Disco singles from the mid to late 70s.

3. My Reviews of the Billboard Pop Music Charts

It's fun to look back at the pop music charts. I start with the 70s- the decade I grew to love music. Currently, I have over twenty-five years reviewed with notes on over 2000 songs. (1960-81, 2005-07)
My Reviews of the Annual Pop Charts

4. Wolfgang's Vault & KBFH

I have moved this into my Active Listening pages. See left sidebar. The King Biscuit Flower Hour and Bill Graham's personal collection of rock concerts streamed from The Concert Vault at wolfgangsvault.com Bill's name was Wolfgang. I use to love listening to the KBFH in the late 70s and early 80s. I love it just as much now.

5. Misc. Music Reviews

  1. I watched my first concert on the Internet and I'm very excited about it. I write about how it compares to that first week MTV went on the air. How I learned about it and the hoops I had to jump through to see the greatest Rock band in the world: The Who.
  2. My aunt gave me a stack of mid 90s Crawdaddy! (by Paul Williams) to read. I enjoyed reading them. The reviews were interesting. Not a style I could or would want to duplicate. But the reviews did make me want to listen carefully to some of the albums I already have.
She also gave me a special Prince insert from the 2004 Minneapolis Star Tribune. The Biography was interesting with all the interviews. I particularly liked the album reviews because they honed close to my own thoughts.
I couldn't find the liner notes for Bob Dylan's "Biograph" so I typed them up myself. It seems odd but I don't think they appear on the CD boxset. I got them from my vinyl boxset.
  3. I also have some quick comments about the 2008 Grammy Awards, 2007 Grammy Awards, and 2006 Grammy Awards

6. Creating Music

I won't start this project until I get a good start on project 2. In the meantime here are some pages of interest.

  1. Headphones, I came up with this silly project when I started doing the research for the equipment list. It's photos of me and the various headphones and earphones I've owned and my take on them.
  2. Four Track Recording Mix Sheet, If you're interested in my recording process I'm posting a mix sheet for one of my tapes (Tascam 23), which contains 14 songs. An actual Mix Sheet (pdf) for this tape can be found here

7. Listening History

This is the project I'm currently working on. It's going to take a while to get started. Work in progress

8. The History Of Rock

Here are some interviews of my favorite artists in my favorite Rock Magazine Musician Listener and Player There are other sources on the web, but this most closely matches my tastes ;-)

9. Musical Odds and Ends

  1. I have a couple of weird musical lists
  2. A table showing my favorite bands of 1980, 1981, 1982
  3. KBFH concert playlists
